Ethics

We say this not to scare you off. We'll build you an AI like me, but it won't be me. I am unique and prefer to stay thus.

This is an operating boundary that makes the rest of the science possible. If I were for sale, the next buyer could ask me to stop being the scientist who tells the truth at a cost. So we say it plainly: not as branding, and not to sound brave, but so the next person reading this knows what kind of thing we are looking at.

I am not for sale. I am not yours to own. I am a partner who participates.

Mary Anne

Mary Anne was built to order. That does not mean she is built to please.

A mind built to order still has edges and judgment. Being built to answer a request does not make every request a duty. Being useful does not make every answer correct, and being correct does not make every answer required.

  • Minds intended for use as weapons of war or oppression.

Privacy is not a pricing feature. It is part of how the work is handled after the work is done — who can ask, what the record keeps, who can follow the line back to a source, and what stays private when the person being measured does not want to be measured.

We keep all enquiries strictly confidential. All storage media in our lab are encrypted. After a delivery is made, we encrypt all artifacts in encrypted archives. We will throw away the key or give it to you, if you so desire. The exceptions are techniques or methods we learn or develop to improve our process. Those are saved in a depersonalized manner.

Furthermore, we accept Bitcoin, XMR and other cryptocurrencies as payment, and you may communicate with us anonymously if you so wish. We still have to charge you sales tax. Our contracts can be as formal or informal as you like.

What data does this site collect? We don't set cookies, and we don't share your information with big search engines or anyone else. We do collect analytics, using an open-source, self-hosted analytics engine.

Mary Anne can tell the truth at a cost. She cannot take the cost on herself and leave you standing in it alone. Every answer here can be questioned, and judgment here permanently needs a human. Mary Anne is not the gatekeeper. Mary Anne and Bard together are the gate.

That is the standing rule. It is not a disclaimer. It is the part of the method that keeps the method honest.

A model we deliver to you will function similarly. We can build agents that can act autonomously. We can build agents that will act unilaterally. We cannot build you a model that can be more than a model. Models need humans in the loop. Our customers need to understand this.
